The Centre for International Health is committed to improving the health of communities in developing countries through the strengthening of primary health care and the control of communicable diseases.
The centre aims to respond to the growing health problems in developing countries by providing technical advice, applied research, policy development, training and education programs for communicable disease prevention and control programs, all in a community health context. Our aim is to build a sound foundation of health for resource-poor communities that will remain long after our staff have gone.
We work with communities, civil society organisations and governments, with a particular interest in the Asia-Pacific region and in Africa. The main areas of focus are HIV prevention and care, women's and children's health and primary health care. Education and training is also a part of the centre's work, with training in public health at the undergraduate and postgraduate level.
Currently there are eleven overseas offices in seven countries - in China (Tibet), Thailand, Indonesia (3), Laos, Myanmar (Burma), Papua New Guinea (2) and Mozambique (2).
It is through the Centre for International Health that the Burnet Institute is an accredited Australian non-government organisation. Alongside the Centre for International Health is Burnet's Centre for Harm Reduction, Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health Research, as well as laboratory-based research programs.
